Yes, but the driver module and all of its dependend modules are loaded.
As I wrote, the nouveau Xorg driver will be loaded anyway, but that doesn't mean it's actually used.
even if there was no "module unloaded" message in the Xorg.0.log?
All the evidence I see tells me that it refuses to run and Xorg is using the generic "modesetting" driver instead, this is the one Felix Miata is talking about too btw.
After uninstalling nvidia, nv and nouveau this driver indeed is loadead and later unloaded, as the log states. The next one is fbdevhw which seems to be the one the X server is finally using.
And running Yast's hardware info, it says "Kernel driver: nouveau". And whats more: There are journal entries about crashes and errors regarding the nouveau driver.
Don't confuse the Xorg driver with the kernel module. The nouveau kernel module (kernel driver) is still loaded, even if you uninstall the nouveu Xorg driver, and "modesetting" depends on it/requires it too.
Ok, I didn't know that, but see above ...
I understand your doubts, I share them, but what I see differs from what I believe :)
Well, you may be misinterpretung what you see. To prove that the nouveau *Xorg* driver is used, please provide the Xorg.0.log. ;-)
Ok, The next time I have the time to test, I'll provide logs, I promise :)
Ooops. That may explain, why zypper on Tumbleweed shows a warning regarding stability when you install the nouveau X server.
No, that's about the Mesa OpenGL nouveau driver, another part that's quite unrelated to the Xorg driver, and also used by "modesetting" if installed.
Ok. [...]
But a new kernel in the kernel stable repo, where I get my kernels from.
Again, this is completely unrelated to the kernel module, support for your GPU is apparently missing from the nouveau Xorg driver, not the kernel module.
Uh, slowly but steadily I get the pieces together - thx!
Well, did you upgrade the kernel-firmware too?
Yes.
Hm. Maybe try to run "mkinitrd" then to make sure the new firmware is part of the initrd.
Doesn't kernel installation always trigger a mkinitrd?
It is normally loaded before the root filesystem is mounted.
Kind Regards, Wolfgang
