I was hoping that someone else on this list, who is using VMware would be so
kind as to comment on their experiences using VMware Workstation on kernel
4.2.1-1 so that I can compare notes.

i updated kernel and then updated vmware to latest version.
then i compiled manually vmnet and vmmon modules, because the usual "vmware-modconfig --console --install-all" does not work.
then i copied the kernel modules to the right place which is /lib/modules/4.2.3-1.gef1562d-default/misc for me.
then i restarted the vmware services with /etc/init.d/vmware
then i had to add the following to /usr/bin/vmware:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/vmware/lib/$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

then i was able to start vmware.
