I've got a version here which is a monochrome rework of the 3 coloured
dots, which I'll submit for 12.3, in agreement with the openSUSE KDE
team's designer.

Can't you just change the thing with system settings > workspace appearance >desktop theme? I did

I am not in 12.3 at the moment (nor can get to it because of a glitch with grub2), so what did you end up with when you changed the desktop theme - did you get the previous coloured balls or what? And to which DE did you change?
