I'm wondering if I might have a problem with the drive or defective DVD media (Maxwell DVD-R).
That's no small possibility. Check to see who manufactured yours and you'll likely find they are in group 2 here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm For my own DVD-R use, I only buy Taiyo Yuden any more, several hundred a year. Locally they are not available, and the Verbatim available locally hasn't been the good stuff. For a while JVC was available locally, and it was great while it lasted. I wouldn't give up before trying K3B and burning at half or less speed than the rating of the media. For installing Linux, I rarely burn an iso. Instead I put the installation kernel and initrd where Grub can find them and install via HTTP or NFS. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
