If there would be enough manpower to maintain (e.g.) lots of different init systems, then that would be no problem. It's not impossible,just "somebody" needs to do the work.
I am certainly not downplaying the role of developers and, in fact, I admire them and actually envy them because they have the skills which I lack to do what they are doing. However, when there is no clear goal or direction then the effort put into a project by such capable people may not be used efficiently and in fact may be a waste of time and effort as well as being detrimental to the distribution which they are trying to support.
