Hopefully this saves someone the investigative work.
Weird: I did the upgrade, don't have the file or the link and did not have any the variable is DEFAULT_WM="startkde" (wherever that value comes from ;)
If you have ever selected a value manually from the kdm login screen, that gets written to your $HOME/.dmrc and this overrides the DEFAULT_WM value.
