While it is possible that the compiler is generating buggy code, the
most likely scenario is KDE3 abandonware having a bug. KDE3 may have a bug but that bug will surely be fixed if confirmed. Transition from GCC-4.3 to GCC-4.6 also made kmail to crash anthough it was building well. The bug (the incompatibility with the new compiler) was traced and fixed. Meanwhile there is no problem in building the package with an older compiler.
Ahh, I thought I was the one that got dinged for throwing rocks? 'abandonware'? It is the abandonware of choice for a large number of users - and isn't that what Linux is supposed to be all about - choice? No flames. Candidly, both kde3 and tde are in darn good shape and continue to get better and better. Whether it is done by kde.org or done by Ilya, Robert, Dominique, Tim, Serghei and the rest, it is not only as good as you remember it being, in fact it is much better. openSuSE made a very responsible decision to include it in factory.
