Quite normal, package ipw-firmware isn't installed by default. Fresh installation with 11.4 works like expected.
FYI, I raised bug #715860 on 2011-09-03 14:59 CEST Summary: No wifi post fresh install of 12.1 Milestone 5 My comments at that time were ... The ipw-firmware-9.8.3.noarch rpm should have been automatically installed during the network card detection and configuration part of the installation.
