I'm not sure you can without using something funky like ksplice, and i'm not even sure that's available for other kernels other than Ubuntu at the moment.
ksplice will only work with a very limited delta between kernels. For an update between openSUSE versions (like 11.1 to 11.2), there's no way ksplice would ever work.
The fastest reboot option would be kexec though.
