The KDE4 desktop was updated normally using Yast and KDE4 factory

GDM boots up and displays the login screen, allowing access to KDE3 and
Gnome but not KDE4.

Using XDM as the login manager, an error message complains:
"kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 139. Check
your installation."

This looks like

Bug 492256 - After opensuse 11.1 update of 4.4.2009 gui fails to start,
system reports fault in kstartupconfig4

(I just took your bug description and used the Bugzilla search. :-)

It would be great could you help and provide the requested information
in that Bugzilla!
