Hi, some thoughts about preload: bug apart (#429732) i think we need something better/smarter; now, too many things are hardcoded. For example default kde them (Aya). If an user changes plasma theme this become completely useless/harmful.
Again, from /etc/preload.d/kde: stat /usr/share/kde4/apps/ksplash/Themes/ksplashx- suse/1280x800/background.png stat /usr/share/kde4/apps/ksplash/Themes/ksplashx- suse/1280x800/stripe.png
There's not 1280x800 directory here, only 1600x1200.
It's only a stat - e.g. ksplash tries to figure _if_ there is a 1280x800. And yes, there is a problem with hard coded list and there always was: it can only improve the process as much and what you see is a list generated on my very laptop. I hand edited the list to remove the obvious nonsense. But I don't plan to maintain this any further, but find some more clever way. I looked into blktrace (you see my proof of concept in the preload package), but it's not for general use case ;( I'm pretty sure there are better ways to do it, but I haven't yet found the magic ingredient.
