Greg, I hope you're kidding ;)
We have open-vm-tools KMPs in the distribution, which brings all the drivers for a VMware session you possibly might need. All nicely under GPL.
Did I misunderstand your statement?

I had some minor issues with open-vm-tools on 11.1 with VMware Workstation 6.5.1 and ended up having to use the proprietary ones that come with 6.5.1. I haven't had a chance to do the troubleshooting necessary to file a bug yet. But neither the open-vm-tools nor the VMware ones would do Unity mode when the guest was running 11.1 with a Gnome desktop, both of them would do Unity mode when the guest was running 11.1 with an XFCE desktop, but only the VMware-supplied version would do shared files with the host. -- M.
