The thing is that even a manual grub setup does not work, because it is broken itself. You need a fixed grub first
Matthis, Thank you very much. It indeed looks like this one. Interestingly, when searching in bugzilla I had this one open but did not read far enough through to associate it to my problem... Well, I subscribed to the bug, so I'm aware when a new version of grub will be pushed out. In the meantime I'll just go with an older version of grub, like all the others. curious to see what actually broke.
