Package xsane if Gnome is installed
And if Xfce is installed, please. xsane has no real GNOME dependencies, it's plain Gtk+, so I don't think that we should it install only when GNOME is installed.
It's also a GIMP plugin so it makes sense to install it as soon as GIMP is installed.
That can be solved by a supplements
No. RPM Recommends/Supplements trigger the installer to install whatever/whenever is available. As both xsane and sane-frontends provide a GIMP plugin, both would have a Supplements but then GIMP users would have by default two scanning plugins which is not what I like to have by default: Fill the user's disk by default with all what looks useful regardless how often there is a tool for the same task. What I would need is non-mutual-exclusive RPM Alternatives preferably with additional conditions when which alternative should be preferred and one marked as fallback/default (obviously RPM Obsoletes/Conflicts is inappropriate). But I think this is all off-topic because as far as I understand the patterns they are basically used to get a reasonable default set of installed packages.
