OR, advise thunderbird developers *they* need to change.
They recent provided the back end that allows an extension to provide the function to those who wish it. I don't understand why they think it shouldn't be a basic included function, but since TB is open source, you're free to submit a patch to change it, and hope for approval. In the meantime, trust that most people are not going to select a MUA based upon the preferences of mailing list admins.
