Si no has compilado nunca programas en Linux (y de lo que dices deduzco que ese es el caso), prueba primero con otra cosa más fácil y de la que no dependa el funcionamiento de tu máquina; o dicho de otra forma, las pruebas con gaseosa.
En efecto no he compilado nunca por que no he tenido necesidad, yast me ayuda demasiado. Ok, creo que puedo ser más especifico ahora, He instalado squid desde un rpm que descargue y que yast instalo, lo configure y funciona perfecto, ahora necesito habilitar snmp pero en los manuales dice que tengo que habilitarlo desde la utileria de configuración propia de squid, la cual se manda llamar desde src donde se compilo el tar.gz o lo que sea de squid (./configure), yo instale con rmp y no tengo src, ¿Como puedo ejecutar la sentencia para habilitar el snmp entonces? ¿llamando a squid puedo habilitar el snmp y si es asi con que función? ¿puedo hacerlo directamente en el squid.conf? Es probable que el RPM de suse ya incorpore soporte de snmp. En ese caso, sólo habría que indicar en squid.conf los parámetros adecuados :

Fíjate que debes tener configurado snmp en la máquina y que debes atacar la máquina por el puerto 3401 (udp supongo), no por el 161 que es el estandard para snmp.
Ok, ya habilite el SNMP en el servidor tambien agregue las linesas a las acl para snmp por el puerto 3401, pero no me arroja nada el mrtg, voy a verificar con snmpwalk.
