Its a nice list but this is all the stuff we have already put forward and they have binned.
Sounds like you are pushing at a firmly closed door.
Theres nothing in pdf format - ie sales informations?
If they have ignored all the other evidence, why are they going to take any notice of a pdf? - They'll just dismiss that evidence too.
No it is shiny and flashy so more likely to hold their attention.
They tend to listen more to people trying to sell them something expensive.
If you are in the UK, I can give them a ridiculously expensive quote and a nice pdf
Great bounce one over, if you know anyone else who can send them as well.
:-) But I doubt it will work if they really are that change averse. They will always find a reason not to do it because it is change they fear more than anything. Every minor glitch will be a reason to say we told you we should not have changed.
Our setup has always been commented on as "Toy" - but I never seen much toy like with sels 9 - as we don't have a room full of license paper. etc...
What it demonstrates is the sort of clueless attitude that you are not going to change with common sense. Probably the only thing that will convince them is when everyone else around them has moved - that is why they want sales info. They will use it to discredit anything that is a minority so you are on to a loser simply because Linux is a minority platform.
Web its not - most web applications are built on lamp stack, thats why the original box was bought.
They are clearly not early adopters. A better strategy would be to do some simpler things like Audacity, Inkscape, FF, OOo etc on windows as a start.
We been doing that for the last 8 years... IE 7 killed off firefox again. But we need a VB replacement - we can't afford a new version, old on has packed up. Gambas does everything we want and more, and even better that VB6 which is what were are coming off but only runs on linux. We got a few bit of software like this, that does what we need and has the price of free. We are starting a new course, as the old ones have ended, so it has new requirements and new software needed. Were are a grade 4 college, so theres no money. We have three routes: Windows + Adobe stack - which costs a fortune Apple + Adobe stack - which cost a fortune Linux + FOSS stack - Free The course has a 5 year life span, so the costings per students can be worked out. BTEC provides a list of suggested software, and the costing are bad.
That's why I developed the INGOTs, to enable people to learn before making the transition. The "late" majority won't move until others do. Most of the change stuff says you have to get the early adopters on board before the early majority, early majority before the late majority, late majority before the laggards. If your managers are laggards they are risk averse and there is nothing you are likely to be able to do to change that in the short term.
The problem is not with the line managers, its with the ITS manager which I think are on par. So you got to go up another level, and the computing manager is an artist (dept of IT and Visual arts) so he needs all the help he can get. Which is why stuff like sales material is good for him, a quick intro into the "buzz" etc...
Sorry if it's not encouraging but it is probably reality. Put energy into battles you can win.
So the real question is where to draw the line? Will we only fight the battles that have already been won? Its not this bad but close - The college can only afford either the Teaching staff or the software, not both. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
