not to blame. Whoever it was that suggested using redirected output "> filename.tar" in the last thread is severly mistaken about how tar works..... You can't just make a sweeping statement like that. By default GNU tar writes to stdout. Redirecting the output to a file works. I'm not sure what you're getting at
I think what Thomas meant was that if you give the f option, GNU tar does not write to stdout, but to the named file parameter. HTH.
