tar...
Quite literally, log in as root; <cd />; . Then copy
the resulting file to a network drive. In the event of emergency, do basic
installation to new hard drive, copy tar back and restore it. 30 minutes is
probably achievable, depending on speed of machine and size of installation.
Or...
Try Partition Image: http://www.partimage.org - looks pretty close to fully
functional, particularly for your purposes, and it would be nice to have
someone (else?) on the list with practical experience...

Subject: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Hard disk image
Folks,
What's the *simplest* (unexperienced!) way of taking a
complete image of a SuSE 7.2 installation incase of
disaster hard drive melt down? There's one drive in
the machine (partitioned to default SuSE install
settings). I've had a few hard rives die recently,
none on important machines, but you never know. I
obviously backup data daily on production machines,
but it would be much easier in case of hard disk
failure, to have an exact *easy* image ;) I imagine we
could be up and running again in thirty minutes with
such a solution?
Thanks in advance...
