Hi,
I've got my server running SuSE 8.0 but now I can't connect to an X session remotely. What does the server need to know in order to deliver X to my remote workstations that it knew in 7.3 but doesn't in 8.0?
You need to start X with either the -query or -broadcast option and you need xdm/kdm/gdm/etc configured to accept XDCMP requests. The latter may well be turned off by default, but the way you turn it on depends on the display manager.
The solution:- OK - I start with X :1 -query server and, if server is running xdm, it offers me the remote login. If I run kdm it doesn't. I have checked the /etc/X11/ folder for possible configs for kdm but only find xdm. /etc/sysconfig offers me displaymanager but only allows me to define kdm variables. In fact, it is in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm that I find kdmrc and kdmrc.SuSEconfig lurking. kdmrc is the config that is used when kdm starts and although the .SuSEconfig had the correct settings, somehow it hadn't been copied over into kdmrc. Thus there was the [Xdmcp] section, "Enable=false" which should have been true. That was it - thanks to those who gave me the clue where to go - I was on the right lines but looking in completely the wrong place! -- Best wishes, Derek
