I think a more generalised education in computers helps more than proprietary led courses; in other words, a good BSc in Computer Science may be able to help with Michael's questions more than a good MCSE or CNE. Those weren't meant to be easy problems! They are significantly harder than anything you're likely to come across doing day-to-day network and systems administration - I was thinking of the sort of things I would expect my R&D people to be able to do, given somewhere between a few hours and a few days of thinking time. FWIW, and I'm probably atypical in taking this approach, I would value an MCSE as a negative attribute unless the applicant said that they only took it because they thought employers wanted it. I would rather have someone who learned the stuff through experience (or even "just for fun") than someone who learned the stuff solely as part of an MCSE course. Just my 2p. Michael
