Firstly, try running 'ifconfig' and see what the output is. You should see at least two entries, the loopback (127.0.0.1) and the eth0 network card. It should show you the card details; IRQ, IO addr, MAC address etc., as well as the IP details; IP address, netmask, network and broadcast etc., If one haft of this info is missing, then that's probably where your problem is. If the card is PCI, check /proc/pci and see what it reports the card details are, and make sure they match the /etc/modules.conf file. If you still have a problem, post back with the settings you think you have set, and we'll have another look. On Thursday 18 January 2001 15:56, acraig wrote:
Hi folks
Setting up new machine and new install of linux.
Set up minimal install. Used Yast to set up IP address / gateway. Used Hard config to specify network card type (3Com 3C509)
Tried to ping IP address - "Network unreachable" Tried rebooting to see if all programs needed would be run next time round - still no good.
Any suggestions (or pointers to suitable (easy) text)
Many thanks
