Hello all:
<snipped>
I have managed to "install" a version of Linux (I am using a Red Hat one for now as it claims to be fine on 386 +s) on a dx2/66 with 16MB ram and a 540 HD. It works fine until I begin the ext2 formating (after making a 40MB swap file). It begins to format the hda1 partition and then an error appears in the blue screen saying that it has recieved either error 5, 9, or 11 (on suucessive tries) and then says that it is safe to reboot. I've not got beyond this message. Any suggestions?
I've got a 486DX33 with: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 6940 6480 460 4504 532 2660 -/+ buffers/cache: 3288 3652 Swap: 24060 1692 22368 It's running RH5.2. I tried to upgrade it to RH6* (2.2 kernel) but I got the signal errors you mentioned. On trawling through usenet archives the problem seems to be related to the use of a RAM-disk on install ie if you haven't got enough RAM it wont have it. I'd suggest you use an old distro with a 2.0 kernel, buy new hard drives (you can get several gigs for 50 quid, and it will save a lot of mucking around) and custom roll a kernel as this improves performance significantly on a slow machine. I used to use my 486 as a workstation, it ran X (slowly) with a lightweight windowmanager (www.fvwm.org) and I used lynx for browsing and I still use mc for file management. I now use the 486 as a firewall/gateway/mailserver/newsserver and it's fine: $ uptime 3:34pm up 28 days, 1:56, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.16, 0.22 -- Frank Shute *-------*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-------* | Boroughbridge | Tel: 01423 323019 | PGP keyID: 0xC0B341A3 | *-------*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-------* http://www.esperance.demon.co.uk/
