Or are you implying that openSUSE will never be a practical choice for the >18 month crowd?
There is the openSUSE evergreen approach. It has a page in the wiki. I suggest to join the efforts Wolfgang and others are focusing on. The life time of openSUSE 11.3 had been announced from the beginning. We also need to free the resources openSUSE 11.3 based builds consumed. And there is an alternative. Go with SUSE Linux Enterprise based products and you'll get something going much, much longer.
