OK, so I have an answer.
The /etc/pam.d/login file is wrong on the new system. It only contained a
single line:
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
And nothing else. Therefore, all local logins were failing directly.
Compared to my main workstation, where the login file contained:
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth include common-auth
account include common-account
password include common-password
session required pam_loginuid.so
session include common-session
#session optional pam_lastlog.so nowtmp showfailed
session optional pam_mail.so standard
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
Copying all these lines on my new laptop "corrected" the problem.
The login file does not seem to belong to any package, so gets created
somewhere somehow by /bin/login, and this is possibly no longer working or
invoked or something?
As I went through fresh installs of this laptop about 10 times, experiencing
the same issue, I am guessing this was real.
