Philip, it appears you may have the same gfxcard as I have here, where the
behavior you describe has not been observed. You may wish to experiment with a
configuration more like mine:
# xrandr | egrep 'onnect|creen|\*' | grep -v disconn | sort -r
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 2640, maximum 16384 x 16384
DP-2 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 519mm x
324mm
DP-1 connected primary 2560x1440+0+1200 (normal left inverted right x axis y
axis) 598mm x 336mm

What inxi is showing among other things is I am using neither the FOSS nouveau
nor any proprietary NVidia software, but the other competent DDX appropriate
for use with NVidia GPUs, modesetting. I use neither Gnome nor Wayland. The
modesetting DDX can usually be employed simply by uninstalling
xf86-video-nouveau, and if present, purging all proprietary NVidia video
software.
