This issue is indeed nothing new. Firefox only allows opening local paths and not full urls, so something like /home/foo/bar works, but not network://host/file or mtp://smartphone/baz.
As the KDE file dialog integration gets called with the "only local files" option, those options are disabled as Firefox could not handle the resulting URLs.
To be able to use them, Firefox would need to be ported to KIO or a translation layer needs to be written (which is currently a WIP). So for now it's unfortunately a WONTFIX.

List is complete with network and smartphone.
