Nicolas, I didn't get the idea of your experiment.
What I know for sure:
- the difference of desktop system responsiveness is extremely different
between current Tumbleweed release and 20181015 snapshot. I've made a test with
clean install 20181015, 20181018 and further snapshots. The difference appears
just on 20181018 snapshot. 20181015 was really better.
- the issue depends on the processor type (and GPU probably, but not sure), the
affected CPUs: Intel with HT and all which has IBRS spectre_v2 mitigation.
For example:
Intel i5-6300U CPU is affected when HT enabled:
/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2:
Mitigation: Indirect Branch Restricted Speculation, IBPB: conditional, IBRS_FW,
STIBP: disabled, RSB filling
If HT is disabled or spectre_v2=retpoline was specified in kernel options the
system is more responsive and
