Regarding probing of serial devices:
There is active probing and passive probing. If you e.g. read:
https://github.com/brltty/brltty/blob/master/Drivers/Braille/Albatross/brail...
and
https://github.com/brltty/brltty/blob/master/Drivers/Braille/Albatross/brail...
it opens the port in turn with 9600 and 19200 baud, waits for a '0xff, 0xfe,
0xff, 0xfe' sequence, and only then starts replying.
I think this is considerably save, and could stay activated.
It would be nice to have a list of devices capable of passive probing, I think
this would narrow down the number of undetectable devices considerably.
