Requiers at a bare minimum bug 899755 to be addressed, so that a potential change in the package list can be picked by PackageKit

as it is now, packagekitd terminates shortly after the applet asked for the list of updates; any change using zypper in the background means there is no further info, until the applet actively queries again.

Once this infrastructue is built up, it depends if the applet listens for notifications from PK directly or not - that's something to take care of on the KDE side (hence, I assign this bug to the KDE Desktop - but there is not much you can do until the depending bug is fixed; not too long ago libzypp would not even have allowed for this)
