On the other hand, I don't know why would style change when using ssh, so maybe this is something else.
At least GTK based desktops configure the style using a configuration daemon, which also allows to update the settings in all GTK applications in real time. When that daemon is missing, GTK falls back to configuration files in $HOME (such as ~/.gtkrc-2.0 for GTK 2), and failing that, it uses the default theme (the boxy Raleigh theme for GTK 2). When running via SSH, you're running a single program on a remote display, without the config daemon.
