I would support update to 6.5 plus some post-6.5 patches (at least those
mentioned in https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/817, SLE bug 1047198) into
the widest set of products. Ideally SLE12 update channel as an optional or
recommended update. It would improve not onyl NVME support, but also support
for SSD.
Even SLE11 SP4 now has later version than SLE12.
Update for SLE12 SP3 or Leap only is OK for me as well. Hardware update for SLE
could take the Leap version then.
In case of smartmontools: later version => less work, less backport requests
Risks of version update are very low: broken firmware could behave incorrectly
with newer version. It happened once, more than 10 years ago.
