Would it be possible to check that the disks exist which are listed in
/etc/crypttab?
The first check should be when running mkinitrd. That wouldn't have caught this
problem early but it would catch similar problems.
The second check should be when the ramdisk tries to mount the devices. If the
links aren't there, fail with a good error message (and stop dracut from
printing 100 "Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout" messages while I try to fix
the problem).
And a tiny script to chroot (with the mount --bind). If you forget the three
mount --bind, then chroot will fail with "/bin/sh: No such file or directory"
which is confusing.
