There are a few things you may want to do to provide further information:

1. Install "kdebugsettings"
2. Run "kdebugsettings" and enable debug
3. Run kmail from the terminal, capture all the output until the hang, and
attach it to this report

(don't forget to turn off debug in "kdebugsettings" after you are done)

If there is no useful output there, you may want to install debug symbols for
kmail, and attach gdb to the process:

gdb -p `pidof kmail`

in a terminal

followed by "bt" to get a backtrace of the hung process.

Please provide that here too.

Also, are you using a "major" email provider (like Google, Yahoo, Outlook) or
another one? Are you using POP3 or IMAP?
