Both GRUB and the BIOS seem to be working fine, at least they work and respond. Only OpenSUSE 42.1 stops booting with the device plugged in. With 13.2 before, I did not have that issue.
Maybe this will give a hint: When the machine boot successfully - so without an extra USB device - I still get an error but the system boots. It says:
usb can't set config error -28
Otherwise, I did try what you suggested and you are right. I get a lot of kernel output when booting without initrd. What should I look for in there that could help? For some reason, having initrd supresses the output, even without the quiet flag.
