http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1002454 Bug ID: 1002454 Summary: Tracker not to be included with Xfce desktop Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xfce Assignee: bnc-team-xfce@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: opensuse@rogerprice.org QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0 Build Identifier: Introduction: The page Portal:Xfce https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Xfce introduces Xfce << The Xfce desktop environment consists of a number of components providing ... Many components remain optional and/or may be exchanged for alternatives. In addition to the core components the Xfce community provides numerous ... add-ons such as ... >>. This page is clear that Xfce is a basic desktop to which the user may add as much as desired. This is to be compared with the GNOME portal https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:GNOME which explains that << GNOME 3 lets you get things done... It sports a minimal and elegant design and all the software you need. You'll find ... and much more. >> It is clear that GNOME comes already fully featured. Currently the tracker packages are installed and autostarted with both the GNOME and the Xfce desktops. Tracker is << a powerful desktop-neutral first class object database, tag/metadata database, search tool and indexer. ... It has the ability to index, store, harvest metadata, retrieve and search all types of files and other first class objects. >> Request: That the tracker packages not be automatically included with the Xfce desktop. In the spririt of Xfce, the user is free to add them if needed. Xfce includes the basic commands such as grep and find. The user may add indexing tools such as mlocate, tracker and baloo. Why the request: Tracker automatically indexes the users' home directories. This entails disk I/O and cpu activity on behalf of the users which they have not called for. It is in contradiction with Xfce principle of providing only the core components. Narrow focus of this request: The request applies only to installations in which the installer has chosen Other -> Xfce Desktop during Desktop selection: - KDE Plasma Desktop - GNOME Desktop - Server (Text Mode) * Other * Xfce Desktop - Minimal X Window Brasero: Brasero is the default CD/DVD burning software for the GNOME desktop. It is currently included with Xfce. Brasero requires the tracker packages, and if the tracker packages are removed, brasero must also be removed. This is not a problem for Xfce users, since Xfce also includes the K3B CD/DVD burner. Xfce users who require brasero are always free to add it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Installation with Desktop Selection -> other -> Xfce 2. 3. Actual Results: tracker packages installed Expected Results: tracker packages _not_ installed This report applies only to Xfce desktop, and not to KDE or GNOME. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
