I think a font viewer can be considered necessary software for a full-featured desktop environment such as Gnome.
patterns-openSUSE-utilities gets pulled in a standard Gnome install, so adding gnome-font-viewer to that pattern should do the trick.
I'm not convinced by the quality of g-f-viewer yet... as soon as you have more than a handful of fonts installed, it becomes terribly unusable As such I don't feel it the moment (yet) to add it to the pattern.
