Then it is the more surprising that the Xserver started with the G04 driver. Check comment #3. It could however be that the X driver in G04 worked but the libGL didn't.

Anyway with an unworking NVIDIA driver having installed it's pretty clear, why desktop or even already displaymanager could not be started. Xserver falls back to a usual X driver like fbdev/nouveau, but then the wrong libGL is being used (the nvidia one). In addition the wrong GLX Xserver extension has been tried to load during Xserver startup. So this needs to fail.

I don't think a missing reboot is the issue here.
