I know this hack (under warning), and used it more than twice. However, this is no satisfing and no clean solution. You get many error messages from update-alternatives. And it is not clear (at least not to me) whether these are harmful. A clean and cooperative solution could be to provide the link from update-alteratives to alternatives already by the SUSE rpm of update-alternatives. Also it could additionally provide "alternatives" for compatibility. This is only a string.
