Do you still have incompatible error in comment#2?
"and booted that one up via usb stick and selected the upgrade entry in its
bootmenu as you advised, and it indeed finds the dev/sda2 partition showing
older suse linux but it says i386 there, still when continuing to try to
upgrade that partition it displays and the found entry, it later on actually
shows a refusal error message that the underlying system is not compatible with
this booted"
If yes, can you please help to provide the yast log. follow the instructions
here.
