--- Comment #9 from Markus Greger ---
I've just had the same experience:
* /etc/nssswitch.conf contains "hosts: files mdns4_minimal myhostname dns
wins"
* /etc/nscd.conf contains "negative-time-to-live hosts 0"
* nameresolution via "ping" fails, via "nmblookup" works
* nameresolution via "ping" works after stopping nscd
* nameresolution via "ping" works after starting nscd again
Why did it not work straight ahead? How would one disable the negative caching
for the hosts target, if not via negative-time-to-live?
I haven't used nscd before but sometimes use named with forwarding. I'd rather
disable nscd, if I can't get it running reliably ...
