This editor is used in unban: To reproduce 1.install and start fail2ban with ssh-tcpwrapper config on 2.try to connect via ssh with bad password to be banned 3. restart fail2ban to force unban 4.check in /etc/hosts.deny you are still banned restart log in /var/log/fail2ban.log: 2015-04-13 16:10:58,710 fail2ban.server [1192]: INFO Stopping all jails 2015-04-13 16:10:58,737 fail2ban.actions[1192]: WARNING [ssh-tcpwrapper] Unban 192.168.0.10 2015-04-13 16:10:58,760 fail2ban.actions.action[1192]: ERROR echo "/^sshd: 192.168.0.10$/ d w q" | ed /etc/hosts.deny returned 100 you can see this log sometimes too 2015-04-13 16:05:04,789 fail2ban.actions.action[1169]: INFO HINT on 7f00: "Command not found".
