I worked around the problem by setting
use_lvmetad = 0
in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf, and disabling both lvm2-lvmetad.socket and
lvm2-lvmetad.service.
Of course the problem doesn't occur any more
On OpenSUSE 13.2, it seems that lvmetad is disabled by default again; at least
use_lvmetad is not set any more after the update to 13.2.
I tried just for curiosity to enable lvmetad on 13.2 by reverting the actions
above. I'd rather not do that again. The system ended up in recovery mode, I
saw lvmetad and pvscan jobs hanging but the sulogin environment was unstable.
So I am now using 13.2 with lvmetad disabled again.
