--- Comment #73 from Lee Matheson 2013-11-05 17:20:54 UTC ---
Less than one hour ago, I successfully installed the 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 RC2
to a colleague's Sony Vaio Pro 13 from the 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 RC2
installation .iso on a USB-3.0 memory stick (using a USB-3.0 port on the Sony).
It works very nice :)
A couple items of note. The Sony has two FAT partitions of identical size.
OpenSUSE identified one as 'SONYSYS' and one as EFI. My Colleague had already
divided the Sony's 256GB SSD drive into two partions of equal size (one the C:
drive and the other the D: drive according to Windows8, where the D: drive was
subsequently dedicated to openSUSE-13.1 RC2). We were careful to mount the EFI
FAT (but not reformat) with the openSUSE installer partitioner (in addition to
setting up our custom install settings for formating/partitioning).
Next - The 1st reboot went to Windows8.
To solve that we rebooted to a the different 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 RC2 liveKDE
iso (which was on a separate USB stick) and we mounted the FAT EFI partition.
We noted there were two Boot directories there ! One was /Boot, and the other
/EFI/Boot. We copied the content of the /EFI/opensuse EFI directory to the
/EFI/Boot (which had only one file: bootx64.ef) and in that /EFI/Boot we
renamed the shim.efi to bootx64.efi. (I'm going by memory and I need to check
my notes to confirm - but that is what I recall). As an aside, we noted the
old /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi (which we replaced) was identical to a
/EFI/Boot/microsoft/..../bootmgfw.efi (we did an md5sum to confirm it was
identical).
We then rebooted and openSUSE-13.1 RC2 grub showed up and everything was
nominal. We then rebooted to Windows8 to confirm it worked (ok !! ). And then
we booted back to openSUSE-13.1 RC2 to ensure Windows8 did not overwrite the
grub/EFI boot entry (apologies for my terminology) and openSUSE-13.1RC2 boot
manager was still there and we could still boot to openSUSE.
So I had none of the problems with 13.1RC posted by other Sony Vaio Pro 13
users, other than the constant reboot to Windows8 which was fixed by the
copying of shim.efi over bootx64.efi.
I'll keep touch with my colleague, to see if any problems come up in the future
with this Sony Vaio Pro 13 and openSUSE-13.1 RC but overall I have to stay the
install went well.
