I have some more information regarding to this, sorry for the timing...
I discussed with upstream about the description of our libvdpau sub-packages.
They all look like:
This package contains the VDPAU state tracker for xxx. This is
still "work in progress", i.e. expect poor video quality, choppy
videos and artefacts all over.
I got confirmation from upstream that these descriptions were outdated for all
but libvdpau_r300 where it still applies. The reason is that acceleration works
very well on UVD-capable hardware, and that started with the R600 family.
Before that, video decoding acceleration was attempted using the 3D engine
shaders and that didn't work too well.
This has two consequences:
* Installing libvdpau_r300 by default doesn't make that much sense.
* The description of the libvdpau_{nouveau,r600,radeonsi} sub-packages should
be updated to drop the mention of "work in progress" and associated warnings.
These would frighten the user for no reason.
