Summary: vmw_balloon.ko cannot be loaded
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 12.2
Version: Final
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@xxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa-bugs@xxxxxxx
Found By: ---
Blocker: ---

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/21.0

The script /etc/init.d/vmtoolsd attempts to load vmw_balloon.ko after loading
vmblock. However, vmw_balloon.ko cannot be loaded.

Therefore the command /etc/init.d/vmtoolsd start ends with the ENODEV - error
message.

An attempt to do so ends with the error ENODEV. I guess the reason is found
within vmw_balloon.c:

if (x86_hyper != &x86_hyper_vmware)
return -ENODEV

unfortunately I did not find any hint explaining what could be wrong. Maybe the
loading of an additional kernel module would be neccessary, but this does not
show.

Thank you for looking into this.

Take care

Dieter Jurzitza

Actual Results:
See above

Expected Results:
vmw_balloon to be loaded
