--- Comment #26 from Neil Rickert 2013-03-17 20:58:45 UTC ---
I reinstalled grub2-efi on the first disk. The result was disaster.
Let me expand on that.
I actually installed a second copy of 12.3, but using the first disk for
booting:
/ /dev/sdb4
swap /dev/sdb5
/home /dev/sdb6
/boot/efi /dev/sda1
The install was fine. And, from the grub boot menu, I could boot either the
new installation booting from the first disk, or the second installation
booting from the second disk. There was also a menu entry for booting windows.
Listing nvram with "efibootmgr", it looked as if the old entry for booting the
originally installed opensuse had been deleted. However, I presume that I
could have booted it from the grub entry (not tested).
Next, I tested booting Windows 8. And that worked fine.
It seems that Windows 8 has erased the opensuse boot entry from nvram. I can
no longer get back into the system after booting Windows 8.
If I hit F12 during boot, then my Dell gives me a choice for booting. The only
UEFI option in that choice is for Windows. There is no UEFI option for the
installed opensuse. There are MBR options, but they probably won't work since
nothing has installed a boot sector.
Booting with the rescue disk (written to USB) - I can boot that in UEFI mode.
Running "efibootmgr" from the rescue boot does not show any opensuse boot
options.
Later, I'll try reinstalling grub2-efi on my originally installed opensuse
version, to see if I can get that booting back.
