I have installed openSUSE 12.1 on a new hard disk almost successfully. I specified that the created partitions should be aligned on cylinder boundaries by the partitioning tool from the corresponding installation system.
Why? The whole CHS stuff and cylinder alignment is completely useless nowadays and with modern HDDs (with 4k sectors), aligning to "cylinder boundary" also hurts performance.
Now I wonder why they are marked with asterisks by the following tool from the package "util-linux 2.20.1-1.6.1".
The installer uses parted. So likely parted used different CHS geometry (IOW different random numbers) than cfdisk and therefore cfdisk complains.
