There is a rather simple work-around. After the 'sudo make install' fails, run
the command 'sudo /usr/sbin/grub2-mkconfig'. That creates a sub-menu entitled
"Previous Linux versions". Your newly created kernel will be found there when
you reboot.
Note: The entries are not removed when you delete the vmlinuz or initrd files.
So far, the only way I have found is to edit /etc/grub2.cfg and remove the menu
entries. The YaST => System => Boot Loader screen only offers to install the
boot loader.
