https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726056 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726056#c0 Summary: Plugin a printer should not require any setup at all. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@suse.com ReportedBy: ploum@ploum.net QAContact: jsmeix@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=458423) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=458423) gnome-printing debug log before configuring the printer with HP-toolbox User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 This involves a laptop running OpenSuse 12.1 beta with the GNOME desktop and an USB HP Color LaserJet 1600 printer. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Plug the printer. A notification tells you that a printer has been connected. 2. No printer available from any application. But I thought it was detected? 3. Starting Yast to configure the printer. It asks for your root password. (why? each user could have its own printer, isn't it?) 4. The printer is not seen is Yast. Trying the "autodectection" stuff. 5. After some random actions, Yast tell me that my printer requires some proprietary modules. That I should go in some place to download them. Why not proposing me to download it immediately? Why telling me where to look? 6. Because I knew from experience that the package was HPLIP, I installed it with zypper. 7. Restarting Yast and autoconfiguration foo. This time, it seems to work. Printer appears configured and everything. 8. Trying to print. Nothing happens. No error, no job sitting in the queue. 9. Trŷing the GNOME built-in printer support. Adding the printer is way easier. Strangely, the autodetect setup seems a bit different for the very same printer. 10. Trying to print: this time, I've an error which offers me to debug the issue. The debug log is attached to this bug. 11. Still no printer. Ranting on Twitter and everywhere. 12. Launching manually HP-toolbox. Discovering that there is a third way to install and setup a printer. (Seriously, WTF?) 13. Using HP-toolbox, configuring and setting up the printer. 14. It works ! Actual Results: I'm completely upset. Expected Results: 1. Plugin the USB printer. 2. If HPLIP is not installed, having a popup immediately proposing me to install the software needed for my printer upon acceptation of the license. 3. Having the printer immediately configured and appearing in my printers list. Note: this is exactly how Ubuntu behaves. If Ubuntu does it, it should not be technically hard ;-) I consider this bug as a major flaw. It makes all the difference between a distribution that anyone can use and a distribution only for geeks. GNOME has a very good tool to configure printers nowadays and, IMHO, KDE has it too. As such, Yast should just avoid touching anything. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
